City council approves grant submission
Before a standing-room only crowd, Cleveland city council approved the submission of a Texas Capital Fund grant that would provide funds to install water and sanitary sewer lines to a new hospital located on South Travis. After hearing presentations on both sides of the issue, the council voted 4-0 in favor of the proposed $730,000 grant. Councilman Willie Carter abstained. Speaking on behalf of Cleveland Regional Medical Center, which has strongly opposed the grant application, CEO Ron MacLaren said "this is not an apples to apples or oranges to oranges comparison. We do have a plum,"MacLaren continued, "and this facility would be taking the rich, meaty part of the plum and leaving the pit." Dr. Robert Rosen, former chief of staff for CRMC, countered MacLaren's remarks by noting that 67% of Cleveland residents already "went elsewhere" for their hospital care, although he did not comment on the source of his statistic. See the July 16 issue of the Cleveland Advocate for a complete report on this and other actions taken by city council.
