Community packs council chambers
Approximately 120 Cleveland residents showed up at City Hall Thursday night for a town hal meeting to hear details about a federal mortgage program available to low-income citizens. Because so many attendees were unable to either see or hear the speaker, Rick Florence, Community Development Specialist for the United States Department of Agriculture, agreed to repeat his presentation to a second audience. Those who were able to get seats for the initial 6 p.m. meeting listened intently, took notes, and then left with information in hand, allowing the overflow crowd outside to take their seats for the second presentation. Florence broadly outlined the program which provides no-down-payment, no out-of-pocket closing costs, low-interest mortgages to low and very low income citizens in rural areas. Other loan and grant programs are available to qualified citizens for repairs to existing structures. Florence will be back in Cleveland on July 22 to meet with prospective contractors seeking to be added to the agency's approved contractors' list. See the July 23 issue of the Cleveland Advocate for details on this story.

Committee and public to address zoning issues
The Friends of Downtown Committee, which normally meets Mondays at noon, will conduct a special meeting on Tuesday evening, July 29, to 281-592-2661 which the public is invited and encouraged to attend. The meeting will Lobby Hours: be held at Austin Memorial Library at 6 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to get community input on what Cleveland residents would like to see happen in various areas of town for future land use and economic development while protecting Cleveland's history, identity, and residencies. "Zoning is what we're talking about," says Mike Heilers, committee member, "but zoning isn't what everyone thinks it to be." The controversial subject of manufactured housing is expected to be addressed, but other issues will include upgrading the facades of 400 Fort Worth downtown businesses to present a uniform appearance and identity to residents and visitors alike; new construction; future housing developments; and what is required to attract new businesses, restaurants, and retail outlets to Cleveland.
