Cupboards bare again at Operation Refuge
"The need is increasing, so the food goes out faster," says Frieda White, president of Operation Refuge, Inc., (ORI) explaining why the food pantry is nearly empty at the organization's distribution center on North Blair Street. White notes that the last quarter saw an increase of approximately 13% in area residents turning to the non-profit organization for emergency assistance. "We've experienced a lot of generosity from many of Cleveland's businesses and churches," says White, "and we are so thankful for that. We just need to somehow develop more sources for restocking the pantry." Any individual or organization wishing to make either a financial or in-kind food donation to ORI should contact Frieda White at 281-592-0204.

Operation Refuge recently opened a Thrift Shop at 509 N.San Jacinto Street in Cleveland, offering clothing, dishes, books, furniture and other items at low prices. Proceeds from the Thrift Shop will be used by ORI to build a new distribution center. The Thrift Shop is open Wednesday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Zoning to be subject of public meeting
The public is encouraged to attend a special evening meeting of the Friends of Downtown Committee on Tuesday evening, July 29 at Austin Memorial Library at 6 p.m. Committee members want community input on what residents would like to see happen in various areas of town for future land use and economic development while protecting Cleveland's history, identity, and residencies. "Zoning is what Mon .-Thurs. 9:00-4:00 we're talking about," says Mike Heilers, committee member, "but zoning isn't what everyone thinks it to be." The controversial subject of manufactured housing is expected to be addressed, but other issues will include new construction; future housing developments; and what is required to attract new businesses, restaurants, and retail outlets to Cleveland.

4-H looking for kids, horses
A group of interested and involved parents is looking for kids with horses in the Cleveland area to establish a 4-H Horse Project Club here. Currently, there is such a club in the Dayton/Liberty area, but the distance acts to prohibit involvement from families in the east end of the county. Kids must be at least 9 years old, or in the third grade; have a horse; and must live in Liberty county. For more details, contact Cindy McGrath at 281-689-1852.
