Rash of fires breaks out in county
Since July 1, at least 7 fires of unknown origin have damaged or destroyed manufactured homes in the Dayton and Liberty areas. Fortunately, there have no injuries to date. Several of the fires took place when the occupants were not at home. The latest fire occurred Thursday night, shortly after 10 p.m. just south of Dayton, completely destroying a well-kept, doublewide manufactured home. A neighbor says he first heard two loud explosions, looked out his window, and saw the house in flames. The owner was not at home at the time of the fire. The Westlake Fire Department utilized one fire truck and a tanker with 2,500 gallons of water to bring the blaze under control. Last Sunday, July 20, another manufactured home was destroyed by fire in the River Bend Mobile Home Park on Hwy. 90 by the river bridge in Liberty. No one was home at the time. Wednesday, July 16, the Cedar Creek Subdivision south of Dayton was the scene of an engulfing fire that destroyed a manufactured home. The owner was at home at the time, but did not suffer injury. Both the Dayton and Kenefick Volunteer Fire Departments were involved in fighting the blaze which took nearly two-and-one-half hours to extinguish. The previous day, Tuesday, July 15, a fire did significant damage to the front half of a manufactured home in the Darrington Mobile Home Park in south Liberty County. The first blaze in the current rash of such fires occurred on Monday, June 31, when a manufactured home in Oak Mobile Home Park in Dayton was damaged. No one was at home when that fire broke out. The fires are still under investigation.
