Special meeting of City
Council tonight
Cleveland city council will meet tonight in a special meeting basically
designed to be a workshop on the draft of the 2004 city budget. Other
items to be addressed will include a recommendation from the city's
Consulting Engineer regarding a bid award for construction of another
terminal building at the Cleveland Airport, and applying for a grant
for park improvements at Samuel Wiley Park. Council will also consider
the two-year appointment of the Municipal Judge and appointment of
an Assistant Municipal Judge.
Delinquent Court accounts approach
$500,000
An initial report generated by new computer software in Cleveland's
Municipal Court registers an amount owed to the Court, from fees and
fines, of nearly a half-million dollars. "This is a new report
on a new system," says Cleveland City Manager Philip Cook, "so
we've got to do some double-checking of the figures. I'm not comfortable
saying that's a firm amount at this time." The city conducted
an amnesty program several months ago, and the possibility exists
that those fines were not deducted from the computerized report. The
city has hired a "hard-hitting" collection agency to go
after delinquent fines, fees and traffic tickets. The agency will
begin an aggressive collection process in the near future.
Liberty County Sheriff names new Chief Deputy
Liberty County Sheriff Greg Arthur has named Captain Don Neyland,
a 13-year veteran of the department, to replace George Ellington as
Chief Deputy effective August 1. Ellington was appointed by county
commissioners to head the new Delinquent Fines and Fees Department
that will begin August 1 to collect the more than half-a-million dollars
assessed, but still unpaid to various county courts.

Tonight's the night to talk about
zoning
