Redistricting efforts continue in Austin
With one special legislative session on congressional redistricting ended, Governor Rick Perry immediately called another to try and change district boundaries to favor Republican candidates for U.S. Congress. Eleven Senate Democrats have reportedly left Austin to break a quorum and block any redistricting map from passing. State Representative Dan Ellis who, along with 50 other House Democrats, took similar action in the regular session, stated that he feels it is obvious Republican leaders are not listening to what Texans want. Ellis said the majority of people don't want those district lines redrawn. Meanwhile, a special session to deal with school finance, originally planned for this coming fall may have to wait until spring. (Courtesy KSHN Radiogram).

The revised sixth edition booklet gives information on how and where to get free and low cost prescription drugs. "Many major drug companies provide free or low cost medication, but rarely, if ever, publicize the programs," says Gary Nave, Director of The Institute. "We've published an A to Z listing of all the drugs that are available through patient assistance programs, for free or at very low cost directly from the manufacturer." Consumers can receive a copy by sending $5 to cover the cost of printing, postage and handling to: Institute Fulfillment Center, Booklet #PD-60, P.O. Box 210, Dallas, PA 18612-0210. County Sheriff's Department goes to school
Officers from the Sheriff's Department, Liberty, Dayton and Mont Belvieu PD's, Prct. 2 Constables Department, Liberty County EMS and voluntary fire departments attended the first "Major Crime Scene First Responder School" on July 24. Designed for officials who are normally the first to arrive at a major crime scene, the course was taught by Billy Tidwell of Dayton, who has a major background in law enforcement and training experience. The course addresses the preservation of life and safety of first responders, as well as preserving and collecting evidence. According to Sheriff Greg Arthur, a representative from Sam Houston State University attended the first day of class and was impressed enough with the program that they would like to adopt it in their Law Enforcement Training and have Tidwell teach it. The second class will be August 13 and 14, and is open to any law enforcement, EMS and fire department personnel in the area.
