Public forum on zoning attracts good crowd
The "Pro Cleveland Rally", held last night at the Austin Memorial Library and sponsored by Friends of Downtown Committee, attracted a number of interested citizens. Committee members Mike Heilers and Brad Browder led a lively discussion about the controversial issue of zoning. Browder had large maps available, clearly marked with current commercial and residential areas, so that people could identify and visualize the areas being discussed. An unmarked map was also displayed, on which Browder began to color in areas the attendees felt should be protected for future land use. There was almost unanimous agreement that downtown Cleveland, as well as some residential areas such as Kirbywood, Circle Drive, and Glen Park should be so protected. Many citizens expressed their feelings that manufactured housing now in place should be allowed to remain, and Committee members agreed. "We don't propose that anyone's home be taken away from them; that's immoral," said Heilers. In answer to comments about the appearance of some housing areas, both manufactured and site built, Heilers said that zoning only impacts actual land use. Issues such as required skirting and slab foundations for mobile homes must be addressed by city ordinances. Additional public "town hall" meetings will be held in the near future to further discuss Cleveland's future land use and business development.

Friday begins Sales Tax Holiday
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 1-3, is the 5th annual Sales Tax Holiday, during which selected items are declared exempt from sales tax. Timed to coincide with clothing purchases for the new school year, the holiday exempts most clothing and footwear items, priced under $100, from state and local sales tax. Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn reports that since 1999, the Sales Tax Holiday has saved Texans about $150 million; more than $118 million in state sales tax and nearly $31 million in local sales taxes. "I love the Sales Tax Holiday," says Strayhorn. "It is one time that hard-working Texans keep their dollars in their pockets for their families' priorities. And it's not just for school kids, mom and dad can spiffy up their work wardrobe as well."

Texas Senate stands "at ease"
The Texas Senate continued to stand at ease yesterday, July 30, as eleven Democratic Senators chose not to attend the second called session of the 78th Texas Legislature for the third day in a row. The current special session was called by Governor Tick Perry to address the question of congressional redistricting, along with other issues. The eleven senators, all Democrats, chose not to attend because under the rules that govern this particular session, they do not have enough votes to stop a bill concerned with redistricting from coming to the floor of the Senate. District #4 State Senator Tommy Williams said he is disappointed with the senate members who left the state for New Mexico to block the latest attempt by the Republican majority to redraw congressional district boundaries. Williams said if the missing Democratic Senators plan to stay away until Governor Rick Perry abandons redistricting, they could be gone a long while. In Williams' opinion, Governor Perry will call as many special sessions as necessary to change district lines. (Courtesy of KSHN Radiogram)
