YMCA announces after-school child care in Cleveland
The Liberty County YMCA, in partnership with Cleveland schools, will begin a program of after-school child care in Cleveland on Monday, August 18. Registration will begin next Monday, August 4, at the Cleveland YMCA office. The office, located at 102 East Houston, will be open Monday-Friday, from 4-6 p.m. for registration purposes. The cost is $35 per week for 1 child; $65 per week for 2; and $90 per week for 3 children. The one-time program membership cost/registration fee is $25 for an individual and $40 for families. This fee provides YMCA membership privileges for one year, and applies to other programs. After-school child care extends to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will be available for children from kindergarten up to the sixth grade at Southside Elementary. School bus service from other campuses will be provided by Cleveland Independent School District. After-school child care for pre-kindergarten children, ages 3-4, will be available at the Douglass campus until 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Chamber hosting Taste of Cleveland lunch
The Cleveland Chamber of Commerce will host The Taste of Cleveland on Thursday, August 14, from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Austin Memorial Library. Area businesses will be providing unique foods that ticket-holders may sample, while also displaying information about their products and services. To date, 14 local firms have signed up to bring items ranging from home-baked breads, muffins and desserts to chicken, pizza, pasta, and yogurt smoothies. Tickets for the meal are $6 and may be purchased at Easy Street Florist, Omni Physical Therapy, or the Chamber office. People are being encouraged to buy early, as tickets are going fast and are limited. Contact Sheila at 281-592-5579.

Sales Tax Holiday is here
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 1-3, is the 5th annual Sales Tax Holiday, during which selected items are declared exempt from sales tax. Timed to coincide with clothing purchases for the new school year, the holiday exempts most clothing and footwear items, priced under $100, from state and local sales tax. Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn reports that since 1999, the Sales Tax Holiday has saved Texans about $150 million; more than $118 million in state sales tax and nearly $31 million in local sales taxes.

Annual Fiddlers in the Park coming Saturday
The 5th annual Fiddlers in the Park is Saturday, August 2, from 4 p.m. until Òwho knowsÓ. The event gets bigger every year, attracting fiddlers from all over the area, including some from the Porter area who have been awarded the title of world champion fiddler. Rhonda Henderson and Private Stock are featured to perform, as well as local talent. Arts and crafts vendors will be on hand, as well as several food concessionaires. Drawings for door prizes will take place throughout the evening, including the grand prize of two Southwest Airline tickets, valued at $400 each, that can be used for a round trip to nearly any destination. The fun takes place in Shepherd's Centennial Park and Gardens.

Funeral Services Scheduled
Graveside services for Bertha Land have been scheduled for Friday, August 1, at 10 a.m. at Hilltop Cemetery in Liberty.

Police Department Stats
Cleveland Police and Fire Departments logged the following calls for Wednesday, July 30: A total of 32 general calls were logged; 2 alarm calls, and nine 911 calls. Eight ambulance calls were recorded, including 1 vehicular rollover accident that brought in Life Flight. Seven fire calls came in and 7 offenses were logged, including telephone harassment, theft of service, burglary, a missing person, and 3 forgeries. One arrest was made.

Texan Theatre Movie Listings
Now showing at the Texan: Terminator 3, rated R. Showtimes Friday and Saturday are 7 and 9:15 p.m. Admission is $2 per child, ages 3-11, and $4 for adults.
