West Nile still a Liberty County no-show
West Nile Virus hasn't been found in Liberty County yet this summer. But that doesn't mean it's OK to ignore the little bugs that carry the disease. A Texas Department of Health specialist who's responsible for collecting specimens here to test for the disease urges Liberty County residents to protect themselves from mosquitos at all times. He notes that in Montgomery County, where the virus seems to be widespread, "hundreds" of specimens have been tested, while in Liberty County, which seems relatively disease-free, "about 10" have gone to the lab. "The virus has been found in Harris County, Montgomery County, Jefferson County, Orange County and Hardin County," says Gary Johnson, a zoonosis specialist for the TDH in Houston. "It just seems safe to assume that it's also in Liberty County and that the right bird or horse just hasn't been submitted (for testing) yet."

Cleveland Army veteran best in the state
Judy Sample, a member of the Cleveland VFW Post 1839 Auxiliary and an Army veteran, was named Texas VFW Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year earlier this summer in honor of her dedication to local veterans over the past year. During the 2002-2003 fiscal year, which ended in July, Sample recorded 1,063 hours of volunteer work at the Houston VA Hospital, added many more hours as the chapter's rehabilitation chairman working with veterans in Cleveland, acted as the community service chairman for District 2 of the Texas VFW Auxiliary and was the Cleveland auxiliary's representative to the district board. And that's just the tip of her activities.
