Cleveland woman dies in traffic accident
A Cleveland woman was killed and her two children injured Friday in a one-vehicle accident on a highway south of Lubbock. Peggy Dark, 45, wife of prominent Cleveland lawyer Kent Dark, died Friday evening when the family's 1996 Toyota sport utility vehicle rolled over several times on U.S. 84 near the small South Plains town of Southland. The couple's two children, Rachael, 16, and Ben, 17, were treated overnight at University Medical Center in Lubbock and released the next day.
Visitation for Mrs. Dark is scheduled today, Aug. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Cleveland. Funeral services for her are set Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m., at First United Methodist Church.

Police urge 'National Night Out' participation
Cleveland police will patrol local neighborhoods with their emergency lights on high beam tonight in observance of "National Night Out," a nationwide crimefighting campaign. Police officials here hope Cleveland residents will participate in the campaign by turning on their outside lights and coming out to meet and greet their neighbors beginning at about 8:30 p.m.
The 'Night Out' campaign is held to heighten community awareness of crime and promote police-community crimefighting partnerships.

Lunch reservation deadline today
Today is the deadline to make reservations to attend the Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce third-quarter membership luncheon later this week. Tickets to the buffet-only lunch are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. The luncheon is scheduled Thursday, Aug. 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Hot Biscuit Family Restaurant on South Washington. For more information,

Go Texan committee sets clay shoot
The Liberty County Go Texan Committee will host a sporting clay shoot this Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Pecan Meadows in Hardin. Entry fee is $56 per shooter. For more information, call Tommy Haberle at 936-336-2925.

Police report
Cleveland police responded to 45 calls Sunday, Aug. 3, and investigated a theft in the 1100 block of East Houston, a burglary in the 3200 block of Fenner and an assault in the 300 block of Taft. Cleveland firefighters
answered a call to a possible electric fire on FM 1010 and assisted the Tarkington fire department with a structure fire on CR 309.
