Commissioners OK county pay raise
Liberty County commissioners OK'd a new budget earlier this week that
looks a lot like last year's budget except for a 3 percent pay raise
for county employees, including elected officials. The commissioners
also approved a tax rate to support the budget; 58.1 cents per $100
valuation, the same as last year. The measures carried on identical
3-2 votes, with commissioners Melvin Hunt and Lee Groce and County
Judge Tookie Kirkham voting to approve, and commissioners Todd Fontenot
and Norman Brown voting against. Fontenot and Brown said they voted
against the measures because they're concerned about how the funding
of various departments was cut to balance the budget.
Coaches taking heat advisory seriously
Cleveland football coaches are keeping one eye on their players and
one eye on the thermometer this week as pre-season practice turns
serious. An excessive heat advisory for the area issued by the National
Weather Service early in the week will probably be extended through
the weekend, so the coaches are paying extra attention to the players'
need for water, rest and shade.
The 60 players who turned out for the beginning of two-a-days Monday
enjoy routine five-minute breaks built into their two morning workouts
-- and can get water any time they feel like it during the workouts.
They also get a solid 30-minute break between the two workouts and
are taken inside and plied with Gatorade during the break.
"We're keeping them watered down big-time," says head coach
Al Celaya. "We're just trying to keep them cool."
