TVE entries due
The 2003 Trinity Valley Exposition begins Saturday, October 11 and runs through Saturday, October 18 - and deadlines for various entries in the livestock and home economics divisions are rapidly approaching. FFA and 4-H members wanting to participate in the Breeding Beef, Breeding Swine, Market or Breeding Rabbit or Livestock judging contest must submit the appropriate entry form into the TVE Fair Office on or before September 8. Entry forms for the Home Economics Division of TVE, which includes food, arts and crafts, are also due on or before September 8. Forms are available on the website of www.trinityvalleyexposition.com, or from the TVE Fair Office at 936-336-7455.


TVE searching for queen contestants
Applications are being accepted for the 2003 TVE Miss Rodeo Pageant. Open to young women ages 14-23 in Liberty, Chambers, Harris, Polk, Montgomery, Hardin, San Jacinto and Jefferson counties, the pageant will be held on October 11 and 12. Contestants must be available to participate in the rodeo activities during the week of TVE, October 15-18. Contestants will participate in a luncheon interview, speech competition, and horsemanship skills and knowledge tests. Applications must be postmarked by September 15, and be accompanied by a $50 entry fee. For more information, or to request an application, call 936-298-2213 or 936-336-7455.


Benefit scheduled for Deputy John Hanies
John Hanies worked for the Liberty County Sheriff's Department for 12 years, and was a reserve officer for 4 years after that before he went to the Kountze Police Department. Sheriff Greg Arthur says about Hanies, "he was a good man". Hanies has contracted Lou Gehrig's disease and is, according to Arthur, "real sick". A benefit for Deputy Hanies will be held at the VFW Post 8953 in Romayor on Saturday, August 23, from noon until 6 p.m. Proceeds from the benefit will go toward hospital and medicine expenses for Hanies. A live band will be on hand, plenty of food, auctions and raffles.


Safe Saturday night planned for Junior High kids
The Liberty County YMCA is sponsoring another Saturday night event for area junior high students tomorrow at Southside Elementary gym from 7-10 p.m. Billed as "Deeper", the night will include a live band, a video game tournament, "wild and wooly games", food, fun, and friends. Admission is free, although students must have present an approval card signed by a parent or guardian. The cards are available at the door Saturday night, or at the Southside gym entrance Friday afternoon from 3-6 p.m.


Funeral Services scheduled
Services for Grace Gladden are scheduled for Friday, August 22, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Point Blank.


Police report
Cleveland police officers investigated 7 offenses Wednesday and made three arrests - for speeding, theft, and possession of dangerous drugs. Other offenses recorded include burglary of a motor vehicle and of a building, assault, and disorderly conduct. A total of 11 ambulance calls were noted, including an accident on 59N by Dream Homes that resulted in a subject being transported to Cleveland Regional. Police answered a total of 29 general calls, and eleven 911 calls.


On Tap at the Texan
Starting tonight is "S.W.A.T.", rated PG-13. Showtimes Friday and Saturday are 7 and 9 p.m.; weekdays, 7 p.m. Admission is $2 for children 3-11, and $4 for 12 and up.
