West Nile threat not over
yet
The Liberty County Extension Office has issued a warning about the
ongoing threat of the West Nile virus in Liberty County. "We
are now entering the peak season of human infection for West Nile
virus and other mosquito-borne diseases," says Ron Holcomb, County
Extension Agent. Holcomb says these diseases begin to spill over into
human populations in late-summer, and usually calm down by October
15. People who contract the virus will likely suffer from flu-like
symptoms. To avoid mosquitoes and the possibility of disease, wear
clothes that are loose-fitting. Clothing should also be light-colored,
because mosquitos are attracted to darker hues.
New law affects traffic tickets
A new law goes into effect on September 1 that will establish a point
system for moving traffic violations, assessing a surcharge to offenders
based on the type and frequency of offenses. DPS Spokesperson Lisa
Block said the Driver Responsibility Law assigns points to a driver's
license for each offense and attaches surcharges to drivers with 6
points or more. (Courtesy KSHN Radiogram)
