Historical Society meets
tonight
The Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce Historical Committee is
sponsoring an initial meeting for persons in Cleveland who are interested
in preserving the city's history and artifacts. The meeting will be
held in the board room of First Bank & Trust at 6:30 p.m. tonight,
Thursday, August 28. The purpose of tonight's gathering is to talk
about Cleveland history and to get organized. The main initial emphasis
of the organization will be to preserve photographs, documents, and
small artifacts that are now in danger of being misplaced, or of being
in a deteriorated condition that needs to be rectified. Some long-terms
goals of the group are to preserve older buildings in the community
and larger artifacts, and include establishing a museum. Craig Bounds
and J. Rice, committee members, will host tonight's event that is
open to all interested citizens.
Early voting starts today
Twenty-two proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution will be voted
in or out in a special state-wide election September 13. Early voting
begins today, August 28 and goes through September 9th at the Cleveland
Courthouse Annex. The propositions address a wide variety of issues,
including veterans' affairs, taxation of church-owned property, travel
trailers, rural volunteer fire departments, lawsuits against doctors
and health care providers, and freezing taxes on residence homesteads
of those over 65, or disabled. An educational summary of all 22 amendments,
prepared by the staff of the Texas Legislative Council, is available
online at www.tlc.state.tx.us - go to Research, then Publications.
County AARP group to hear about amendments
Several of the proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution will
have a direct impact on the lives of citizens 65 and older - the same
group that also makes up the largest contingent of active voters.
The monthly meeting of the American Association of Retired Persons
(AARP) will be held next Tuesday, September 2, at 6 p.m. at the First
Liberty National Bank in Liberty, and will address some of those issues.
The principal speaker at the meeting will be Alan O'Conner, Central
Appraisal District Chief. Contact Jim Barker at 936-298-2851 for more
information.
