County Commissioners to hold public hearing
A public hearing on the proposed budget for fiscal year 2003/2004 will
be held next Tuesday, September 9, at 8:30 a.m. at the city council
chambers building at 423 Travis Street in Liberty. Following the hearing,
the regular meeting of Commissioners Court will convene at 9 a.m.,
during which adoption of the budget will be addressed. Other items
to be dealt with include adoption of the tax rate, salaries and expenses
for the upcoming year. The Commissioners will also consider approval
of an order designating Cleveland Imaging and Surgical Hospital - the
new hospital to be built on South Travis in Cleveland - as an Enterprise
Zone project for the Liberty County/City of Cleveland Enterprise Zone.
The purpose of the Texas Enterprise Zone Program is to encourage job
creation and capital investment in areas of economic distress by offering
state and local incentives and grants to new or expanding businesses
in these designated areas.
Cleveland council to address budget
Cleveland residents will also have a chance to give input regarding
the City's 2004 fiscal year budget during next Tuesday's city council
meeting. Scheduled for 7 p.m. at council chambers on East Boothe,
the meeting includes a public hearing on the budget, followed by
council
approving the ordinance establishing that 2004 budget. Other items
to be addressed by the council will include a presentation by Mike
Heilers of the Friends of Downtown association - the group that conducted
an open meeting regarding zoning last month. Sewer and water rates
will also be considered, as well as setting the fiscal year tax rates.
The proposed fiscal year 2004 tax rate for maintenance and operation
is .4768 per $100 valuation and .2231 per $100 valuation for debt
services.
Early voting ends Tuesday
Tuesday, September 9, is the last day for early voting in the upcoming
Constitutional Amendment Election. Twenty-two proposed amendments
to the state's constitution will be decided in the election, including
the controversial Proposition 12 that proposes capping punitive damages
awarded in medical malpractice suits. Voting in Cleveland is available
only at the Cleveland county Annex building, from 9-5 Monday and
Tuesday.
Actual election day is Saturday, September 13.
Lots of things to do today
