We will never forget
An all-school assembly to commemorate Sept. 11, 2001 is scheduled at 9:15 a.m. today at Cleveland High School. Cleveland police and firefighters, veterans and various school organizations will participate. The program will include dance, a rifle salute, taps, the Sweet Adelines singing "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and everybody involved singing "God Bless America."

Council sets 2004 tax rate
Cleveland taxpayers should expect significantly higher property tax bills this year.
At its meeting Tuesday, the Cleveland City Council set the city's property tax rates for 2004. The maintenance and operation rate, which generates revenue to help meet the city's day-to-day expenses, is 47.68 cents per $100 valuation. The interest and sinking tax rate, which generates revenue to help pay off the city's debt, is 22.31 cents per $100 valuation.
Last year, the maintenance and operation rate was 46.28 cents per $100, while the interest and sinking rate was zero. The city didn't collect taxes to pay its debt last year, but instead used its excess savings to make those payments.

Water rates going up
Cleveland City Council has approved an increase in the city's basic water rates. Starting in October, the minimum monthly charge for residential customers will rise $3 and the minimum monthly charge for commercial customers will rise by $5.
Homeowners age 65 and over who have a city homestead exemption will get a break on the hike. Their basic rate will only go up $1.50.
The city has increased the rate to generate $100,000 to help pay off the $7.4 million worth of certificates of obligation it sold this summer for capital improvement projects like a new civic center and downtown drainage.
Re-location ribbon cutting planned
