Kingwood College recognizes local clubs
At a special reception held Monday at Kingwood College, Cleveland's Womens' Club, Rotary Club, and Lions' Club were honored for scholarships the organizations award each year to area students. At least one scholarship winner from each club had elected to attend Kingwood College. In appreciation, each club was given a recognition plaque.

Amendments pass
All 22 proposed amendments to the state's constitution were approved statewide in last Saturday's special election - including the hotly contested Proposition 12. The amendment, which buttressed a new state law that went into effect September 1, allowing lawmakers to set "caps" in medical malpractice cases, was passed by a narrow margin of 51 to 49 percent. At least $13 million was raised by both supporters and opponents of the amendments to fund the extensive print and television campaign war waged by both sides. It had been predicted that only about 9 percent of Texas voters would turn out for the special election, but returns indicate the propositions attracted more than 11 percent of registered voters.
And while we're on the subject...
...of government - Governor Perry convened an extraordinary third special session of the 78th Legislature at noon yesterday, Monday, September 15, that saw the "Texas 10" Democratic Senators return after boycotting the previous legislative session. Houston's Democratic Senator John Whitmire, true to his previous announcement, was the first to return to the floor, giving the Republican-controlled Senate the quorum they needed to address the controversial redistricting plan. Shortly after, the Texas 10 entered the room as the overflow crowd erupted with cheers and applause.
