Cleveland police crack down on sex offenders
Within the past 10 days, Cleveland police have made three arrests on charges of indecency with a child and aggravated sexual assault. Thomas Lamar Funk was arrested early Wednesday for indecency with a child, while Steven Wayne Burleson was arrested Monday on the same charge. Late last week, Johnny Ray was arrested for aggravated sexual assualt. "We are aggressively investigating all such allegations," said Detective Harry Kelley, who pointed out that a single conviction on such charges results in the perpetrator being listed as a registered sex offender with the state of Texas.


Liberty county agencies receive UW funds
The Montgomery County United Way has announced that nearly $20,000 will be distributed between seven non-profit organizations in Liberty County. The funds were collected through United Way campaigns in both county HEBs, Cleveland WalMart, and Dayton's Sam's Club, as well as Liberty county residents working in Montgomery or Harris counties who list Liberty county agencies as the designated receivers. The American Red Cross, Cleveland Senior Citizens Organization, Helping Hands Ministry of Rye, Liberty County Project on Aging, Operation Refuge, Inc., Spirit of Sharing, Inc., and the YMCA will start receiving their UW checks in the next few days.


Former Cleveland Police Chief dies
Woodrow Wilson Moore, who served as Police Chief of Cleveland for nearly 15 years in the mid-50s and early 60s, passed away last Tuesday, September 16. Moore was 95. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lea Mae; his daughter, Carolyn Clark and husband Gary; son John Thomas Moore and wife Donna; and grandchildren Angelique Burnside and husband Jeffery; Rene Ferguson and husband Todd; John Clinton Moore, Christopher Moore and Craig Moore. Graveside services will be held at the Providence Cemetery in Jacksonville, Texas today.

- Edmond Wilkerson; graveside service Thursday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m. at Peebles Cemetery.
- Doris Burd; services Friday, Sept. 19, 10 a.m., Pace-Stancil/Probst Chapel, with interment following at Pace-Stancil Memorial Rest Gardens; visitation hours Thursday, Sept. 18, 4-9 p.m., Pace-Stancil.
- Joseph Finney (infant); graveside services Friday, Sept. 19, 5 p.m., Pace-Stancil Memorial Rest Gardens - Babyland.
- Mabel Postal; Family memorial service Thursday, Sept. 18, 2 p.m., Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Coldspring.
- Arrangements are pending for Charles Miller and Thelma Neal.


Police Report
Both Cleveland and Tarkington fire departments responded to a large pasture fire on CR 2296 on Wednesday, Sept. 17. On the same day, three non-injury vehicular accidents were recorded; one at Houston and Washington; one at Travis and East Houston; and one on FM 2025 by the VFW hall. Police made five arrests, and reported 18 911 calls.
