Historical Society chooses board
The newly formed Cleveland Historical Society met last night and, among other items of business, elected their seven-member board of directors. Officers are Sue Hayes, president; Craig Bounds, vice-president; Edna Gilchriest, treasurer; and Wanda Colvin, secretary. Additional directors are Jill Kirkonis, Elton Williams, and Bill McAdams. The next meeting of the Historical Society has been scheduled for Thursday, October 23, at 7 p.m. at Austin Memorial Library. The public is encouraged to attend, and to bring in documents, photographs, and small artifacts of historical significance that they wish to donate to the society. Until a permanent museum is obtained, items will be stored at the library.

Architect to be on hand for public meeting

Next Thursday evening, September 25, Cleveland City Hall will be the site of a public meeting regarding proposed improvements to the downtown Central Business District. On hand to listen to citizen suggestions and comments will be architect Carl Joiner, as well as city officials. One of the main purposes of the meeting is to allow citizens and business owners to help develop a theme concept plan for the downtown region. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in city council chambers at City Hall on East Boothe, and all citizens are invited and urged to attend.

Cleveland family to be on national TV

Rolando and Robin Leal of Cleveland, and their 18 adopted children, will be featured in a one-hour documentary on the cable Hallmark Channel sometime in the coming months. A camera crew and producer spent four days this week interviewing and filming the Leal family - attending church (the producer said they particularly wanted a shot of the entire family piling out of the van in their Sunday "best"); shopping at WalMart; Robin Leal homeschooling four of the children; and just generally living their lives. The Leals have been spotlighted on several Houston TV channels and shows, and have gained some national recognition for the size - and achievements - of their family.

Funeral Services scheduled

- Denman R. "Buck" Watson; Saturday, September 27, 10 a.m., First Baptist Church in Cleveland, with interment following at Abbott Spring Meadows, Corrigan.

The fire department also responded to a call for Life Flight at Hwy. 59 and FM2025 and a vehicle fire at the same location, and an assistance to EMS at Hwy. 321 and CR 2518 - the site of a vehicular accident that sent one subject to Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
