Public meeting tonight on downtown renovation
Council chambers at Cleveland City Hall will be the location for tonight's public "town hall meeting" regarding the proposed renovation of the downtown area - designated in the City's 5-year plan as the Central Business District. Architect Carl Joiner, who has been retained by the Economic Development Committee to develop preliminary drawings for the renovation project, will be on hand to hear citizen's suggestions and comments. Part of the city's plans call for a unified, themed look to downtown; putting all utility lines underground; and installing lampost-style lighting. The meeting, which begins at 7 p.m., is open to the public.


Rotary Club gets grant for work at Samuel Wiley Park
The Cleveland Rotary Club has been awarded a matching-funds grant by their District office to add some playground equipment to Samuel Wiley Park. The Cleveland club intends to install a concrete-slab basketball court, including a light, for smaller children; a jungle-gym; and a new table and benches. Club members will have a work day at the park to install the equipment when it arrives.


Rummage sale starts today

Hi-Way Tabernacle will host a rummage sale and auction today, tomorrow and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its church campus seven miles east of Cleveland on Hwy. 321. The auction is set at 10 a.m. Saturday. Consignment items are still welcome. All proceeds benefit the Hi-Way Tabernacle building fund.


Funeral Services scheduled
- Denman R. "Buck" Watson; Saturday, September 27, 10 a.m., at First Baptist Church in Cleveland, with interment following at Abbott Spring Meadows, Corrigan. Visitation will take place at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home today from 4-9 p.m., and all day Friday, Sept. 26. Services were held Tuesday for Mattie Ferguson, and Wednesday for Geoffery Madden, Deborah Heard and Lillie Willett.


Police Report
Cleveland police recorded 31 general calls Wednesday, including a theft on Center Street and theft of a motor vehicle on S. Washington. Tuesday, police arrested Samuel Ladel Bogang on charges of assault, and recorded 7 other offenses, including theft, burglary of habitation, burglary of building, criminal mischief, and assault.


On Tap at the Texan
Tonight at 7 p.m. is the last night for Open Range, rated R, with Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner. Starting Friday will be Dicky Roberts, rated PG-13. Admission is $2 for children aged 3-11, and $4 for those aged 12 and up.
