Cleveland positive for West Nile
Two dead birds found at separate locations in the Cleveland area earlier this month have tested positive for West Nile Virus.
A Texas Department of Health specialist confirmed yesterday that a Blue Jay submitted for testing Aug. 29 and another Blue Jay submitted for testing Sept. 1 were both infected with the virus.
At least one of the birds came from a residential neighborhood near downtown Cleveland.
In all, five specimens from Liberty County have tested positive since Aug. 23 -- the two Blue Jays in Cleveland, another Blue Jay from Dayton, a crow from Liberty and a horse in Devers.
Health officials tracking the disease have long expected to find it in Liberty County because of its prevalence in surrounding counties. They advise Cleveland residents to follow the "Four D's" to avoid exposure to the mosquito-borne virus:
-- DUSK TO DAWN. Stay indoors from dusk to dawn, times when those mosquitoes likely to carry the virus are most active.
-- DRESS. Wear long pants and long sleeves when you go outside.
-- DEET. Use insect repellant that contains DEET. Spray both exposed skin and clothing.
-- DRAIN. Get rid of standing water in your yard and neighborhood. Old tires, flower pots, clogged rain gutters, leaky faucets, bird baths, wading pools, etc.
