Child mauled by pit bull in San Jacinto county
Six-year-old Alexis Whitmire is in Texas Children's Hospital recovering from surgery to repair bites on the back of one leg inflicted by a neighbor's pit bull on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The dog allegedly attacked Whitmire from behind, without provocation, dragging her down the road until 17-year-old Scott Randall pulled the little girl free. Randall drove Whitmire, her mother, and 2 siblings to Cleveland Regional Medical Center for initial treatment. Whitmire was then transferred to Texas Children's Hospital for surgery. The case is under investigation by the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Department.


San Jacinto Fair & Rodeo totals in
The auction totals for the 2003 SJC Fair & Rodeo are in, and point to another successful year for a lot of young people who worked hard on their animal projects. A total of 169 animals were sold during the Youth Auction for over $148,000. The 100 Club had a banner year, raising over $20,000 and purchasing 32 animals - the second largest purchase since the Club's inception in 1996.


Country attractions, cookoffs kick-off TVE

"County Weekend" at the Trinity Valley Exposition begins tomorrow with barbecue and dominoes. Cookers move in Friday morning, with fajita judging taking place at 8 p.m. The cook-off continues on Saturday, with beans, ribs, and brisket. Deadline for cooker entry is 9 p.m. Friday. A 42 Domino tournament also takes place at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening in the Expo Hall. Entry fee is $5 per player, with many great prizes for the first and second place teams.

--Kenneth Rushing, graveside services Thursday, Oct. 9, 1:30 p.m., at the Houston National Cemetery (VA).
--Dana Jackson, Saturday, Oct. 11, 12:30 p.m., First Baptist Church in Coldspring, with interment at the Pace-Stancil Memorial Rest Gardens. Visitation hours are Thursday, Oct. 9, from 2-9 p.m. at the Pace-Stancil Chapel in Coldspring.


Police Report
Cleveland police arrested Joseph Anthony Duncan on Tuesday for probation violation for possession of controlled substances. On the same day, Edwin Israel Rodriguez was arrested for no drivers' license, unsafe speeds, and parking in a handicap zone. Police also recorded 5 incidences of forgery.

On Tap at the Texan
Tonight's the last night for Matchstick Men, starring Nicholas Cage, rated PG-13. Showtime is 7 p.m. Beginning Friday, with showtimes at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday is Secondhand Lions with Robert Duvall and Haley Joel Osment. Admission is $2 for children aged 3-11, and $4 for those aged 12 and up.
