Tragedy strikes in Shepherd
Two Shepherd teenagers were killed and two injured last Friday night just outside the high school football stadium where the Shepherd Pirates were hosting the Cleveland Indians. The four Shepherd high school students were walking north on Loop 424 just blocks from the stadium when they were struck by a vehicle that was passing a slower car on the right-hand side.
Pronounced dead at the scene were Nathan White and Mark Chalk. Jason Beeson suffered a broken ankle and Harry Boddie sustained bruised ribs in the accident.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested and transported to San Jacinto county jail. The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident and refused to release the driver's name and charges, pending results of that investigation.
Counselors from DPS, the Shepherd school district, Livingston school district, and several area ministers were at the high school all day yesterday, meeting with students and staff. A candlelight vigil was organized by students at 7 p.m. last night at the high school parking lot, and students have also begun a "memorial wall" on the fence next to the site of the accident.

City council meets again on D.A.R.E. car
Cleveland city council will again address the issue of purchasing a dual-use police/D.A.R.E. car in tonight's special called council meeting. In past meetings, the possibility of purchasing such a car has been discussed and then tabled, due to the fact that Cleveland currently does not have a full-time D.A.R.E. officer. Funds for the car had been raised through D.A.R.E.-sponsored golf tournaments.
Other items to be considered include the closing of a portion of Crockett and College Streets on Saturday, November 8, to allow Operation Refuge, Inc. to hold its first annual Fall Fundraiser. The streets would be blocked to through-traffic and would, instead, be used for chili cook-off teams, games, and arts and crafts vendors.
Discussion regarding the appointment of a Municipal Judge will be held in a closed executive session, based upon Municipal Judge William Taft's retirement/resignation at the end of the year.

Commissioners to address results of Harrelson's conviction
In a special Commissioner's Court meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. this morning, commissioners will consider and discuss the effects of the conviction of former Liberty County Treasurer Janet Harrelson, who was removed from office last week in the sentencing phase of her trial. Commissioners will look at such items as payment of her compensation and benefits, as well as the effect of the judgment on the office of county treasurer.
