Sleepy
Hollow fire investigation continues
Cleveland Fire Chief Steve Wheeler says the "site has been released to management",
but that investigation into the cause of the fire that basically destroyed building
6 at Sleepy Hollow Apartments last week will continue into next year.
Agents from the State Fire Marshal's office and the federal Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms completed their on-site investigative work over the weekend.
That allowed apartment management and residents to get in to the portion of the
building which is still standing.
Wheeler said firefighters were able to save four apartment units and most of
their contents with only minimal water damage.
The cause of the fire that started in a second-floor apartment on the northwest
portion of the building could basically be one of three possibilities, said Wheeler,
who was unwilling to give more detail, pending the results of further investigation
and technical testing.
One possibility is that of Christmas decorations on an outside balcony igniting
for some unknown reason. Wheeler said that same balcony, down to the detail of
the decorations, will be recreated in a "burn building" in Beaumont
sometime in mid-January. The purpose of that re-creation -- based upon a photograph
made available to the investigators -- will be to determine whether those materials
could ignite and cause a blaze such as that which destroyed most of building
6.
Consideration of Superintendent's contract tonight
In its regular board meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight, the
CISD board of trustees will address several requests by community
organizations to use school
facilities -- and, in executive session, will consider the contract of Superintendent
Terry Myers.
Members will also hear the first reading of the Texas Association of School
Boards (TASB) Policy Update 71. Update 71 was born out of the Texas Legislature's
actions
is deferring school funding to a possible special session next year. It will
focus on high-profile legislation, legislation that requires school board action
within a defined time frame, and legislation that requires local policy adoption.
The Chamber of Commerce has requested the use of the Southside campus for its
annual banquet scheduled for January 15, 2004.
A construction update will also be given during the regular session.
