Chili lunch today to benefit fire victims
Proceeds from a chili luncheon today at the log cabin in Stancil Park will go
to benefit the victims of last week's fire at Sleepy Hollow apartments. Homemade
chili, cornbread, desserts and a drink will be available for $5 a ticket from
noon until the food runs out. Tickets can be purchased at Cleveland city hall
or at the door.
The idea for the benefit chili luncheon came out of Cleveland city hall and the
Cleveland police department as they sought for ways to help the three peace officers
who were affected by the fire. Cleveland PD Detective Scott Felts and Deputy
Jeff Ashworth of the Liberty County Sheriff's department lost everything they
owned in the blaze, including Christmas presents for Ashworth's two young children.
Used appliances offered by CHA
The Cleveland Housing Authority will be taking bids on used stoves and refrigerators
from now through Tuesday, December 23. Minimum bid amount on each item is $10. "They
work okay, they just need a good cleaning," said Executive Director Barbara
Burns. Persons wishing to place a bid must go to the CHA office at 801 S. Franklin,
from 8-5 Friday, Monday and Tuesday. High bidders will be notified after the
Christmas holiday.
Star Mart struck again
The Star Mart convenience store on Hwy. 321, formerly known as Circle
B, as robbed last Sunday afternoon when the clerk was knocked unconscious
by an unknown assailant.
Mustafa Syed Buckari, 30, was apparently struck from behind by a person or
persons who then ripped out the store's cash register and fled the
scene. Sgt. Investigator
Chip Fairfield is seeking two while males in their mid-20s who had allegedly
been involved in a disturbance with Buckari earlier in the day. One man had
a goatee, white shirt, blue jeans and a stocking cap, while the other
was described
as being heavyset. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the sheriff's
office at 936-336-4500, Liberty County Sheriff's department.

juice
or milk, their picture taken with Santa, gifts, prizes and candy.
Mildred Deal, treasurer of the Cypress Lakes VFD, invites everyone to "come
