Paramedics salute fallen comrade
In a moving display of brotherhood and comraderie, dozens of firefighters and
paramedics paid tribute to one of their own yesterday. The body of Allen Coe,
32, a paramedic with the Liberty County EMS who was killed in a traffic accident
last week, was escorted to his final resting place at Pace-Stancil Memorial Rest
Gardens by a solemn procession of fire trucks, ambulances, and emergency medical
units from departments around Liberty County.
The funeral procession began at Cornerstone Church on Hwy. 105W, wound its way
through Cleveland on Washington Street and out to FM 2025. Intersections along
the route were blocked by police vehicles who saluted as the procession passed
by.
In the tradition of fallen firefighters, Coe's coffin was carried atop a Cleveland
fire truck, behind which trailed a parade of private vehicles that stretched
for blocks.
Coe, son of Charles and Debbie Coe of Cleveland, was killed last week when his
truck struck a transmission pole in Atascocita. Following in the footsteps of
his father Charles, who had served as Cleveland's fire chief until 1982, Allen
served as a volunteer firefighter for Cleveland, then as a paramedic with Cleveland
EMS before he moved on to Liberty EMS.
Mayor makes changes in CHA Board
Cleveland Mayor Monique McDuffie-Davis has made some recent changes
in the board of commissioners that governs the Housing Authority
of Cleveland, including changing
the board structure from 5 to 7 members.
Late last month, McDuffie-Davis replaced two commissioners who had been appointed
by former mayor Richard Boyett to finish terms not completed by other board
members. Clarence Gee was replaced by Jeffrey Wright, and resident representative
Tammy
Shedd was replaced by Trena Jordan.
Last Friday it was learned that the mayor had increased the board of commissioners
to 7 by appointing Irma Powers and Linda Nelson to serve. Both Powers and Nelson
had
been members of the board in 2002 when HUD funding for the Housing Authority
appeared to be in serious jeopardy.
It was reported yesterday that a representative from HUD (U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development) will be meeting with Mayor McDuffie-Davis in
Cleveland on Friday, January 2, 2004, to review the status and progress of
the CHA.
