Prestigious awards still up for grabs
At the annual membership banquet on January 15, the Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce will confer the prestigious awards of Citizen and Business of the Year on two deserving parties - but they need the public's help in identifying those winners. The deadline for submitting written nominations is Friday, January 9, 2004 at 4 p.m.
Nominations must be in writing, and must include a paragraph or list of accomplishments which would qualify the person or business for the appropriate award.
Nominations must be contained in a sealed envelope, with either Citizen of the Year or Business of the Year clearly marked on the outside of the envelope. They can be mailed to the Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, P. O. Box 1733, Cleveland, Texas 77328-1733 or hand-delivered to the chamber office at 222 S. Bonham in Cleveland.

Filing deadline brings surprise
Danna Lee of Dayton filed papers last Friday to run for the Republican nomination for Liberty County Treasurer - a position that most believed was not even technically considered to be vacant.
Janet Harrelson was removed from that office when she was convicted of forgery, abuse of office, and tampering with official documents. Her appeals process was thought to have returned her to the uneasy status of being temporarily suspended, pending the results of those appeals. Commissioners appointed Linda Leonard as interim treasurer.
However, GOP party officials stated last Friday - the deadline for filing for the March primary election - that the Texas Secretary of State's office advised that Lee's application for the position "should be accepted".
Lee is the only candidate of either party who filed for the position.

Plum Grove fatality last of 2003
John Clute, 51, of Crosby, was killed at 11:55 p.m. on New Year's Eve on FM 2090 when his '86 Jaguar was struck by a '94 Ford Expedition driven by Michelle Collins, 38, of Cleveland. A passenger in Clute's vehicle - Carolyn Harris, 47, of Crosby - and Collins were transported via ambulances to hospitals. Their condition is unknown at press time.
Collins was not ticketed at the time of the accident; however, DPS reports the case is still under investigation, awaiting results of Collins' blood tests as mandated by state law in a fatal auto accident.
Clute, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the accident scene.
