Turner bows out of District 2 race
U.S. Rep. Jim Turner, who has represented Liberty County in Washington, D.C. for the past four terms, told the Advocate yesterday that he has decided not to file for re-election to his seat. Because of the now-approved federal redistricting plan, which splits Liberty County into two sections and moves the "big three" of Cleveland, Dayton and Liberty into a new and heavily-Republican District 2, Turner said "I have no realistic opportunity to seek re-election to Congress."
Turner is holding his options open for 2006, saying he is "considering a possible run for the Texas governorship or a U.S. Senate seat from Texas."
To date, no Democratic candidate has filed for the new District 2 seat, although six GOP hopefuls have thrown their hats in the ring. The filing deadline for all districts has been extended to next Friday.

City council, mayor at odds over CHA
An agenda item in Tuesday's public city council meeting is to consider motion to express disappointment with MayorÕs December 17 appointments to the Cleveland Housing Authority Board.
Those two appointments are Irma Powers and Linda Nelson, two previous board members who were removed last fall by former mayor Richard Boyett. Boyett replaced three of the five board members in late 2002 in an effort to address significant issues brought to the city's attention by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) officials.
Mayor Monique McDuffie-Davis had previously replaced two of Boyett's appointees; then, in December, moved to expand the board to seven members with the addition of Powers and Nelson.
HUD has praised the progress of the board during the past year, under the direction of Board Chairman Hector Forestier and Executive Director Barbara Burns, stating that CHA is no longer labeled an agency of troubled status.
The city council meeting, open to the public, is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall on East Boothe in Cleveland.

Police report
Cleveland police answered only 18 general calls Thursday. They arrested Timothy George Ivers on a charge of criminal mischief, and recorded one offense of burglary of motor vehicle.
Cleveland firefighters responded to a call of wires burning on Circle Drive.
