Lampson files for new 2nd District
seat
Congressman Nick Lampson, who has represented Texas' 9th District in the U.S.
House of Representatives for the past eight years, is the lone Democrat to file
for the newly-defined 2nd District seat.
That new district definition split Liberty County voters into two districts,
the 2nd and the 8th. Previously, all of the county had been included in the 2nd
District and was represented by Democrat Jim Turner, who has chosen not to run
for re-election.
Lampson's current constituents include the citizens in areas of Jefferson, Chambers,
Harris and Galveston counties. The new 2nd District encompasses Jefferson County
and parts of Harris and Liberty counties - and a dense population of Republican
voters in the Kingwood and northeast Harris county areas.
Six Republicans have filed for the new district seat; Lampson is the only Democrat
to make a run for the office and will thus be unopposed in the March primary.
Construction up
The city of Cleveland issued 59 residential remodeling permits and 18 residential
new construction permits in 2003, the highest number in either category since
1998.
The city also recorded a five-year high in commercial remodeling permits with
48 in 2003 and fell just short of its five-year high in commercial new construction
permits, issuing 24, one less than 2001.
Fines add up
A total of 261 violations -- the vast majority of them traffic (185) -- were
filed with the municipal court of Cleveland in December. The court collected
$28,668.50 in fees and fines as it completed 292 cases in the last month before
Judge H.N. Taff retired. This month, he's filling in on an interim basis while
City Council looks for his replacement.
