Cleveland Fire Department seeks
volunteers
In front of a packed house at Rotary Club yesterday, Captain Scott Riggs of Cleveland's
volunteer fire department presented an overview of the department - and made
a strong case for the need for more volunteers.
" Not everyone seems to realize that we are a
volunteer fire department," Riggs said, stating that without more volunteers,
the city of Cleveland may face the need in the very near future to consider -
and fund - a paid fire department. City councilman Glen Dodson pointed out that
a paid fire department would require that added taxes be levied against area
residents.
The department, first formed in 1931, is chartered for 40 members. The current
roster lists 24 members, not all of whom are active, and the department itself
averages nearly 600 calls per year. Riggs said a real problem exists with responding
to daytime calls, as only 3-4 volunteers are available during that time frame.
A one-room structure fire requires a minimum of 6 firefighters to comply with
state regulations. Persons wanting more information on becoming a volunteer firefighter
can contact the department at 281-592-2044.
