Lady Indians bound for area playoffs
Coach Rennie Chaney and her Lady Indians district champion basketball team
are anxiously awaiting the results of tonight's game between Stafford and
Manor to find out who they'll play for the area championship this weekend.
That game will be the first of four the team will have to win to head for
the state championship in Region III. Because of their district championship,
the Lady Indians took a bye at the bi-district level. Undefeated again this
year in district play, the team will travel either to the Houston area to
meet Stafford this weekend, or to a neutral site near Bryan or Brenham if
Manor wins tonight's game.
Council to address money issues
A special Cleveland city council meeting Wednesday night will address the issue
of fund balances - and how to keep them growing. Fund balances are monies
not encumbered by projected budget figures. In other words, in one sense,
they're extra funds available for emergency or "rainy-day" use.
Currently, the city shows an approximate $1.5 million fund balance in the
general fund; a $1.6 million balance in water and sewer; and approximately
$750,000 in ambulance. Such balances are required by law and have a profound
impact on a city's ability to obtain bonds and at what interest rate. City
council will address ways to increase those fund balances -- either by revenues
or decreased expenses.
Rep. Ellis to accept award in Cleveland
State Rep. Dan Ellis will be in Cleveland tomorrow morning to accept an award
from probation officers in District 18. Ellis was instrumental in ensuring
that probation officers had uniform insurance coverage across the state,
using the same insurance "pool" available to other state employees.
Rep. Ellis also led a charge in the state legislature to restore funding
to probation offices. In appreciation of his efforts, probation officers
from east Montgomery, Liberty, and Polk counties will be at Ellis' Cleveland
office, located at 201 N. Washington in the Cleveland Mini-Storage office
building, at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning.
