Meet the candidates tonight
Candidates for federal, state and county races from both parties will be in Cleveland
tonight to meet the public and explain their platforms. The Open Candidate
Forum, sponsored by Liberty County News, begins at 5:30 with a gumbo supper
at the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church, 400 W. Hanson. Dinners are
$6 per plate. The Forum, which is free to the public, begins at 6:15, with
candidates for the 2nd Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives
up first. All candidates will first give a brief introduction of themselves
and their platforms, then answer questions posed by a panel of media representatives
and the audience.
Lady Indians to play Manor Friday
Coach Rennie Chaney and her Lady Indians district champion basbetball team
will face off against Manor tomorrow night at 6 p.m. in Bryan for the area
championship. That game will be the first of four the Lady Indians will have
to win during the next two weeks to be bound for the State Championship in
Region III.
School board approves 2004-2005 calendar
Cleveland ISD's trustees approved a calendar for the 2004-2005 school year
that had already received a 72 percent vote of approval from administration
and staff members. School days total 175, with another 12 being set aside
for staff development and teacher preparation days. Holidays begin with Monday,
July 5, as the 4th of July falls on a Sunday. School's out for Sept. 6, Labor
Day; Nov. 22-26 for Thanksgiving; Dec. 20-31 for Christmas; Jan. 17, 2005
for MLK Day; Mar. 7-11 for spring break; Mar. 25 for Easter; and April 29
for Dairy Day. Last day of school will be May 26 with graduation on May 27.
Funeral Services
--Maxine Willmon; services at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19,
at Pace-Stancil/Probst Chapel, with interment following at the Splendora
City Cemetery.
--Arrangements are pending for Arthur Clapper and Lee A. Trummer.
Police Report
The past two days have seen Cleveland police make four arrests. John David
Burgess was picked up on a forgery investigation; Curtis Durward Burell for
possession of controlled substance; Cecil Rayshane Latray for falsification
of drug test; and Tanya Marie Gilmore for DWI.
On Tap at the Texan
Tonight at 7 p.m. is the last night for "Cold Mountain", rated R.
Beginning Friday at 7 and 9 p.m. will be "50 First Dates", rated
PG-13, starring Adam Sandler. Tickets are $2 for children age 3-11, and $4
for age 12 and older.
