Railroad crossings snarl traffic
Union Pacific railroad workers rolled into town
yesterday afternoon to perform some scheduled work on
tracks and signals -- and as a result, every railroad
arm in Cleveland was lowered, backing up traffic at
crossings for several hours.
Police officers directed traffic at the main
crossing on East Houston and San Jacinto as railroad
workers scurried to complete their work and release
the arms. At 4:15 yesterday afternoon, a
representative of Cleveland PD said Union Pacific had
just reported they would be finishing their work "as
soon as possible." The crossing arms had come down,
blocking traffic, at 2:30 p.m.
Emergency alert system on new station
One of the agenda items for next Tuesday's regular
city council meeting is to consider the request from
KORG radio station for approximately $2,000 to
purchase emergency alert equipment. KORG, at 105.3
FM, is a Christian gospel station owned and operated
by Operation Refuge Inc. in Cleveland.
Frieda White, executive director of Operation Refuge
and KORG, says the station intends to become part of
the national emergency alert system (EAS). The EAS
was established by the Federal Communications
Commission in 1994, replacing the Emergency Broadcast
System, and is used by public officials to warn
citizens about emergency situations. In 2002, the FCC
made it possible for the EAS to include a new child
abduction emergency event code which may be used to
activate AMBER alerts.
Other items to be addressed next Tuesday by city
council include the appointment of a temporary
committee to study and advise council of the city's
needs regarding the operation of a future community
center, and a review of the parks improvement plan.
