Cleveland's Memorial to loved ones gone, but not forgotten

History of East Texas and Family

Author: Kat

For a child born near the east Texas town of Fostoria the tang of lumber was always in the air. Sawmill smells like a Mothers caress or a morning spiced by old pine trees. Our Summers seemed forever. Time seemed so long and sweet and ciders of the mill. The whine of the saws hummed all day long. It was a simple world. Everyone shared with neighbors. Times were hard but the lumberyard sustained us. We used our plows to make a garden. We had chickens and cows.

Time has a way of changing and the beloved town was closing down. People were crying on each other shoulders and promising to remember each other forever. The year I believe was 1958. So now faces and voice fade as more and more move away. Many years become as one day. As the company store close the folks will not have this store to see them through till next payday. Many doors close that day. Would be no doctor office or train depot.

Finally the mill whistle wails its last cry. One more era of time has yielded to decay. They are all gone now. The footsteps have all died away. Why do I not feel alone? In memory I know the town again just as it was years gone by. Close my eyes and let my mind drift off with sunlight and rain in a haze as smell of honeysuckles and roses coming down memory lane. Red, White and Blue

Author: Jeanie

I've said the pledge
all during my life
rather we were in peace
or in total strife.

Followed all the colors
red,white,and blue but
now the meaning has
begun anew.

The red for the blood
all the innocent that died.
Blue for the plane that
crashed from the sky.

White for pure love
all Americans have shown.
Poured out their hearts
Not wanting anyone alone.

But my mind is still
in dismay and wonder
of cries that ring in my ears
louder than thunder.

How could anyone be
so eaten up with hate?
Why launch an attack
on The United States?

There are the questions
to which one knows why?
And I am glad he always
stands by my side.

For all of the horror
he allows in his plan.
God the creator of
everyman.

Of all of this terror
He has sent his love
The strength and compassion
from our Father above.

He takes our sadness
and opens our hearts.
To let healing and
brotherhood make a
fresh start.

Let each of us remember
those who did fall
and turn to our creator
who loves us all.

Brother and Sister
we all must unite
no matter religion
nor black or white.

In times like this we
should all join hands
and thank God for
all of his plans.

In his word it clearly
state we are all to love
and never hate.

Out of the rubble
the heroes do rise
regardless of creed
race or size.

I Will Know!

I feel as if I have no beginning,

yet I have no memory of the past beyond my years.

I feel as if I've always existed,

yet I have lived only a few years.

One day my spirit will leave my body,

then I will know!

PLAY DOUGH

Ingredients and Tools For Each Color:

1 cup white flour
1/4 cup salt
2 teaspoons coloring
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup water
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
Plastic bag or airtight container
Medium pot

Getting Ready:

1. Mix flour, salt and cream of tartar in a medium pot.

2. Add water, food coloring and oil.

Cooking:

1. Stir over medium heat for 3-5 minutes. Don't worry if the mixture looks like a globby mess; it'll turn into dough!

2. When the mixture forms a ball in the center of the pot, turn off the stove and let it cool. Then take it out of the pot and put it on a floured surface. Squish it and punch it around a bit; this is called kneading.

3. When you're done, put it in a plastic bag or airtight container and store it in the fridge.

2 cups cold water
Food coloring
Medium saucepan

Getting Ready:

1. Mix the sugar and cornstarch together in the sauce pan. Then add the water and mix a little more.

2. Ask your grown-up assistant to help here. Cook over medium heat, stirring all the time. The mixture should start to boil, then thicken. Takes about 5 minutes.

3. Remove from the stove, cool, and pour into the plastic or paper cups.

4. Be careful with the food coloring since it can stain, but add a little of it to each cup and then a drop of detergent. Done!

GIANT SOAP BUBBLES

Ingredients and tools:

Joy or Dawn detergent (the other kinds just don't work for some reason)
Cold,clear water
Frying pan
Coat Hanger
Glycerine(optional)available at drugstores

Getting Ready:

1. The hardest part. Bend a coat hanger into a loop(probably a job for your grown-up assistant).

2. Mix 1/2 cup Joy or Dawn detergent with 5 cups water. Measure carefully,it makes a big difference. Stir.

3. Add two tablespoons glycerine if you have any (comes from the pharmacy). It tends to make more bubbles. Now dip your coat-hanger loop into the solution, then wave it in the air!

4. Big-time bubble making is a bit like fishing. You'll have much better luck in cool wet weather. Early evenings, nighttime,
and early mornings are often good. Just after a rain is ideal. Don't throw any leftovers away either. The longer your solution sits, the better it gets.

String-and-soda-straw variation: Instead of bending a coat hanger, you can tie a 2 1/2-foot length of string through 2 straws and unleash square bubbles. The trick is to dip your string-and-straw thing into the solution, then wave it through the air. Break the bubble off by flipping the apparatus up a little bit.
